Board Chair Position Description

Board Chair: The Board Chair serves as the chief volunteer officer. As a partner to the other Board members and the Executive Director, the Board Chair will provide leadership to the Academic Consortium to achieve its mission and vision. The position demands an exceptional commitment to the organization, first-rate leadership qualities, and personal integrity.

Term: Two (2) years

Responsibilities:

  • Attends and presides at all meetings of the Board of Directors
  • Works with the Vice-Chair and Executive Director to set the agenda for Board Meetings
  • Ensures the strategic plan is relevant, impactful, and works with the Executive Director and volunteers to implement the plan
  • Ensures strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
  • Inspires and enables volunteers to achieve success
  • Engages membership through organization activities and communications
  • Selects committee and task force chairs with the approval of the Board of Directors
  • Represents the Academic Consortium and serves as the organization’s spokesperson
  • Oversees development/fundraising activities and represents the organization where appropriate
  • Conducts annual performance review for the Executive Director with the Vice-Chair
  • Conducts the annual Board effectiveness survey and performance review with the Vice-Chair
  • Delivers the State of the Consortium during Members Meetings
  • Meets with the Vice-Chair and Executive Director weekly
  • Serves on the International Congress Oversight Committee

  • Possesses outstanding communication skills
  • Effective at leading change
  • Experience in management/oversight of organizational budgets
  • Experience with development/fundraising is desirable but not required

  • Helps others develop their leadership abilities
  • Has the capacity to commit to the position
  • Has a strong record of commitment in Academic Consortium activities
  • The Chair is expected to exhibit all other Board leadership qualities

 

Estimated Time Commitment: 10-12 hours/week

Board Vice-Chair Position Description

 Board Vice-Chair: The Board Vice-Chair supports the activities of the Chair, including sharing responsibilities as appropriate. The Vice-Chair assumes the duties of the Chair in the absence of the Chair and coordinates the activities of the Board Liaisons and Chairs.

Term: Two (2) years

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares to assume the Board Chair at the conclusion of the term as Board Chair-Elect
  • Works with the Chair and Executive Director to set the agenda for Board Meetings
  • Ensures strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
  • Prepares for, attends, and actively participates in all Board of Directors meetings
  • Coordinate the activities of the Board Liaisons and Chairs
  • Conducts annual performance review for the Executive Director with the Chair
  • Conducts the annual Board effectiveness survey and performance review with the Chair
  • Updates and delivers New Board Member Orientation webinar with the Executive Director
  • Presents future year priorities to the membership during the Members Meeting
  • Meets with the Vice-Chair and Executive Director weekly
  • Serves on the International Congress Oversight Committee
  • Assists the Board Chair as needed

Board of Directors Position Description

Board Member: The Board of Directors provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Board members act as the fiduciaries leading the organization towards a sustainable and mission-driven future through sound governance and financial management.

Term: Three (3) years

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares for, attends, and actively participates in all Board of Directors meetings and conference calls
  • Ensures strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
  • Actively participates in strategic and organizational planning with a focus on achieving the mission and vision
  • Abides by the Academic Consortium bylaws and policies
  • Approves and monitor the organization’s budget, programs, and services
  • Actively, professionally, and enthusiastically advocates, supports, and enhances the Academic

Consortium’s mission and public image

  • Evaluates the performance of the Executive Director

Leadership Qualities:

  • Ability to put the mission, vision, and goals of the Academic Consortium first
  • Inspires trust with the membership and other Board members
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Works well in a team environment
  • Is accepting of people with backgrounds and traditions different than their own
