2023 BRAVEWELL AWARD: HIGHEST HONOR IN INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE

The Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health Board of Directors is thrilled to present the 2023 Bravewell Distinguished Service Award to Victoria H. Maizes, MD.  It is the highest honor awarded by the Academic Consortium, bestowed each year to recognize a leader who has made a significant impact on the history and mission of the organization.

Internationally recognized as a leader in integrative medicine, Dr. Maizes stewarded the growth of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (AWCIM) from a small program educating four residential fellows per year to an Arizona Board of Regents designated “Center of Excellence” that trains more than 1000 residents and fellows annually.  At AWCIM, she recruited and built a stellar team. Together they created and pioneered innovative interdisciplinary programs including the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine and Integrative Medicine in Residency, now licensed by 116 residencies worldwide. These educational programs demonstrate the potential to radically disrupt medical education and practice in the United States. She has also overseen the development and implementation of clinical and research efforts at the Center.

Dr. Maizes’ contributions to the Academic Consortium are immense and date back to the origins of the organization with the University of Arizona as a founding member.   She was twice elected by her peers to serve on the Executive Committee.  As founding co-chair of the Consortium’s Education Working Group, Dr. Maizes led a team of educators in developing objectives for medical students in integrative medicine.  She helped facilitate the joint HRSA grant on integrative primary care, one of the most successful examples of the Academic Consortium’s ability to partner with member institutions to deliver on a federally funded grant.

In addition to serving on numerous International Congress planning committees and facilitating special gatherings of members each year where deep connections are made and hearts are filled, Dr. Maizes continues to be an ambassador for the organization by speaking at members meetings and spreading the word about the Academic Consortium in her external presentations. We are grateful for her decades of commitment to the Academic Consortium and to the field.
